Pair of Oval Mirrors Attributed to Gio Ponti
Pair of Oval Mirrors Attributed to Gio Ponti
Italy, circa 1950s
Brass frames with beveled mirror glass
H 170 × W 71 cm (each)
Two tall oval mirrors with brass frames. Each frame consists of tapered brass strips (approximately 3 cm wide at center, narrowing to 1.5 cm at ends) forming continuous oval borders around beveled glass. The brass shows natural age patina in warm golden-brown tones with subtle surface texture. Frame profiles are rounded, not flat. Wall-mounted with concealed hanging hardware on reverse. Beveled edge on mirror glass approximately 2 cm wide. The elongated proportions (170 cm tall × 71 cm wide) create full-length reflection.
ATTRIBUTION & CONTEXT
Attributed to Gio Ponti based on design characteristics consistent with his 1950s mirror designs: slender brass frames, oval format, and tapered profile construction. Ponti produced similar mirrors for Hotel Parco dei Principi (Rome, 1964) and private commissions. However, no maker's marks present, and attribution is based on stylistic analysis only. Italian workshops including Fontana Arte and smaller Milanese ateliers produced similar designs during this period.
